Best Time to Visit Mashiko — Pottery Fairs & Seasons

Come for a fair if you love bustle and bargains; come on an ordinary weekday if you want the potters’ attention.

Season by season

Spring. Mild and green, building to the pottery fair in Golden Week — the town’s busiest days of the year.

Summer. Hot and humid; shops are quiet and the shady cafés welcome.

Autumn. Clear and comfortable, with the autumn fair in early November and colour in the temple grounds later that month.

Winter. Cold and bright. Some museums close for a period and shops keep shorter hours, but strawberries are in season nearby.

Events

  • Spring Pottery Fair — around 29 April–5 May.
  • Autumn Pottery Fair — around 3 November.
  • Mashiko Gion Festival — late July, with floats and a sake-drinking ritual.

Crowds

Outside the fairs, Mashiko is peaceful, particularly midweek — but check closing days, as many shops shut on Mondays or midweek.
