Tochigi tours & tickets

Day trips from Tokyo, attraction tickets and private tours — ranked, then grouped by destination.

Most organised tours in Tochigi are day trips from Tokyo to Nikko: a coach or minivan leaves the city around 8:00, visits Toshogu Shrine, climbs the Irohazaka road to Kegon Falls and Lake Chuzenji and is back by early evening. They are the simplest way to see both the shrines and the lake in one day, which is tight by public transport.

Beyond Nikko, the catalogue thins out quickly. There are a handful of tickets (Edo Wonderland, Nasu Animal Kingdom, Toshogu), a few local experiences, and private-van day trips from Tokyo to Ashikaga, Utsunomiya’s Oya quarry, Mashiko, Nasu and Shiobara. We list only products we found live on GetYourGuide, and we say so where there is little to book.

Honest note on coverage: GetYourGuide is strong for Nikko and reasonable for Ashikaga Flower Park. For Mashiko, Moka & Motegi, Tochigi City and Sano there are only one to four products each, mostly private tours from Tokyo — these towns are easy to visit independently using our guides.

Frequently asked questions

Is a guided day trip to Nikko from Tokyo worth it?

If you want Toshogu Shrine, Kegon Falls and Lake Chuzenji in one day, yes: the tour bus removes the train-and-bus connections that make this hard to do independently. If you only want the shrines, going by train on your own is easy.

Do Nikko day tours include entrance fees?

It varies. Many of the cheapest coach tours exclude the Toshogu admission and the Kegon Falls elevator, or offer them as options. Check the “includes” section of each product before booking.

How far ahead should I book?

A few days is usually enough, but in the autumn-leaf season (mid-October to early November) and Golden Week the popular coach tours do sell out — book a week or two ahead.

Are there tours that start in Tochigi rather than Tokyo?

A few: the Nikko e-bike and matcha tour, a guided Toshogu walk, a guided hike on Mount Chausu in Nasu, bar-hopping and sushi-making in Utsunomiya, and attraction tickets. They are marked “Meets in Tochigi”.
