1SL Moka steam train
Locomotive C12 66, built in 1933, makes one round trip between Shimodate and Motegi on operating days, taking about 90 minutes each way. The best scenery is in early April, when cherry blossom and rapeseed flower together between Kitamoka and Nishidai stations.
ℹ️ Saturdays, Sundays and holidays most of the year; SL ticket around ¥500 plus fare (about ¥1,050 for the full line). Departs Shimodate mid-morning, returns from Motegi mid-afternoon.

2Moka Station and SL Kyuroku-kan
The station building is a four-storey locomotive in glass and brick. Next door, the free Kyuroku-kan houses a 1920 “9600” class engine that is moved a short distance by compressed air several times a day on weekends, with a D51 and old wagons outside.
ℹ️ Kyuroku-kan about 10:00–18:00, closed Tuesdays; free. At Moka station.

3Strawberry picking
Greenhouses around Moka grow Tochiotome, the large Skyberry and the newer Tochiaika. You pick and eat as many as you like in a set time, usually with condensed milk on the side. January to March is the sweetest period.
ℹ️ Roughly December–May, reservation recommended; around ¥1,500–2,500 for 30 minutes. Most farms are a taxi or car ride from the station.
-
4Mobility Resort Motegi
A 4.8 km road course and a 2.4 km oval set in wooded hills. Outside race days you can ride karts, try driving and riding schools, zip-line through the trees or join nature programmes in the Hello Woods forest. It hosts MotoGP’s Japanese round in autumn.
ℹ️ Open most days, about 9:30–17:00; an entry and parking fee applies (around ¥1,200 per person, higher on race days). Bus from Motegi station (limited), or by car.
-
5Honda Collection Hall
Three floors tracing Honda’s story from the first motorised bicycle to Formula 1 cars, MotoGP bikes, the ASIMO robot and classic road cars — all restored to running order.
ℹ️ About 9:30–17:00; included with resort entry. Allow 1.5 hours.
-
6Roadside Station Motegi
A large michi-no-eki beside the railway with a farm shop, yuzu-flavoured ramen and ice cream, and a viewing deck where the steam train passes close by.
ℹ️ About 9:00–18:00; free. 15 minutes’ walk from Motegi station.

7Moka cotton and old town
Moka was once famous for fine cotton cloth. The Moka Momen Kaikan shows weaving on wooden looms and offers short try-it sessions; nearby are a few old merchant storehouses.
ℹ️ About 10:00–16:00, closed Tuesdays; free entry, small fee for workshops. 15 minutes’ walk from Moka station.
