Best Time to Visit Lake Chuzenji & Oku-Nikko — Autumn Leaves Timing

Autumn comes here first — and with it the heaviest traffic of the year.

Season by season

Spring. Snow lingers into April. Fresh green and azaleas arrive from mid-May to June, when Ryuzu Falls is at its prettiest.

Summer. Daytime highs of around 20–23°C make the lake a classic escape from Tokyo’s heat. Cotton grass and wildflowers bloom on Senjogahara.

Autumn. The season moves downhill: Yumoto and Senjogahara in early October, Ryuzu Falls about the same time, Lake Chuzenji and Kegon Falls in mid to late October, and the Irohazaka slopes from late October to early November.

Winter. Deep cold, snow and blue skies. Kegon Falls is fringed with ice, and Yumoto holds a small snow festival in midwinter.

Crowds

October weekends are extremely busy. Visit midweek, start before 8:00, or stay up at the lake. July and August are lively but manageable; from December to March you may have the falls almost to yourself.
