Things to See in Ashikaga — Flower Park, Ashikaga Gakko & Banna-ji

One world-class garden, and a compact old town 15 minutes away.

  1. Ashikaga Flower Park: wisteria

    1Ashikaga Flower Park: wisteria

More than 350 wisteria vines flower in sequence — pale pink, purple, white, then yellow laburnum — over about a month. The great purple wisteria and the 80-metre white tunnel are the highlights. After dark the trellises are lit from below, which many think is the best time of all.

ℹ️ In wisteria season about 7:00–21:00; admission varies daily with the bloom, roughly ¥1,300–2,300. Allow 2 hours.

  2. Winter illumination at Ashikaga Flower Park

    2Ashikaga Flower Park: Flower Fantasy

In winter, LEDs recreate the wisteria in light, alongside illuminated pyramids, a lit rose garden and reflections in the ponds. It is regularly voted among Japan’s top illumination events.

ℹ️ Late October to mid-February, lights from about 16:30 to 20:30 or 21:00; evening admission around ¥1,200–1,400.

  3. Ashikaga Gakko, Japan’s oldest school

    3Ashikaga Gakko

Japan’s oldest surviving academy. Its origins are debated, but it flourished from the 15th century under the Uesugi family, teaching Confucian classics to students from across the country. The thatched lecture hall, gardens and three gates have been restored, and the site is part of Japan Heritage.

ℹ️ About 9:00–16:30 (shorter in winter), closed the third Wednesday of the month; admission around ¥480. 10 minutes’ walk from either station. Allow 45 minutes.

  4. The gate of Banna-ji temple

    4Banna-ji Temple

Founded in 1196 on the site of the Ashikaga clan’s residence, and still surrounded by its moat and earth ramparts. The main hall of 1299 is a National Treasure. A huge ginkgo turns gold in late November.

ℹ️ Grounds free, open daily. Next to Ashikaga Gakko.

  5. Orihime Shrine

    5Orihime Shrine

A bright vermilion shrine to the guardian deities of weaving — and, by extension, of good matches — reached by 229 steps up a hill west of the centre. The terrace looks over the town and the Kanto plain; it is lit at night.

ℹ️ Free, always open. 20 minutes’ walk from the old town, or by car.

  6. 6Coco Farm & Winery

A hillside vineyard established for a school for people with intellectual disabilities, whose wines have been served at international summits. There is a shop, café and tastings, and a well-loved harvest festival in November.

ℹ️ About 10:00–18:00; tastings for a fee. 20 minutes by taxi from Ashikaga station.

  7. 7Kurita Museum

Beside the flower park, a hillside complex devoted to Imari and Nabeshima porcelain — one of the largest such collections in the world.

ℹ️ About 9:30–17:00; admission around ¥1,250. 10 minutes’ walk from Ashikaga Flower Park station.
