Routes at a glance
For the flower park, the JR route is simplest: Ashikaga Flower Park station, opened in 2018, is three minutes’ walk from the west gate. From Oyama the Ryomo Line takes about 35 minutes.
For the old town, Tobu’s Ryomo limited express to Ashikagashi is faster and cheaper. From there, cross the river to JR Ashikaga station (15 minutes on foot) and ride two stops east to the flower park, or take the seasonal shuttle bus that runs from Ashikagashi station.
| Route | Time | Rough cost (one way) |
|---|---|---|
| Tobu “Ryomo” limited express, Asakusa → Ashikagashi | about 1 hr 15 min | around ¥2,200 |
| Shinkansen Tokyo → Oyama, JR Ryomo Line → Ashikaga Flower Park | about 1 hr 30 min | around ¥4,500 |
| JR Utsunomiya Line to Oyama, then Ryomo Line | about 2 hr | around ¥2,000 |
| Car via Tohoku and Kita-Kanto Expressways | about 1 hr 30 min | tolls + fuel |
Getting around
Ashikaga Gakko and Banna-ji are 10 minutes’ walk from JR Ashikaga station and 15 from Ashikagashi. The JR Ryomo Line runs between Ashikaga and Ashikaga Flower Park stations about twice an hour in roughly 6 minutes. Rental bicycles are available at the tourist office near the stations.
Combining with other places
Sano is 10–15 minutes east on the same JR line, and Tochigi City about 30 minutes — both natural additions to a day in the south of the prefecture.
