Which Nikko tour should you book?
Coach day trips from Tokyo are the best value: around ten hours in total, with a guide, Toshogu Shrine, Kegon Falls and Lake Chuzenji. Check whether shrine admission and lunch are included — on the cheapest options they are extras.
Private tours by car or minivan cost more per group but let you choose the stops (Tamozawa Villa, Kanmangafuchi, Akechidaira ropeway) and start from your hotel. For three or more people they are often comparable in price to the coach.
Already in Nikko? There is a guided walk of the World Heritage area, an e-bike tour along the Cedar Avenue with outdoor matcha, and a Toshogu admission ticket you can collect at Tobu-Nikko station.
Booking tips
- In October and early November, book at least a week ahead and expect traffic on the Irohazaka road; tours can run late.
- Most tours meet near Tokyo, Shinjuku or Ginza stations around 7:30–8:30.
- Wear shoes you can walk in: Toshogu involves gravel paths and a lot of stone steps.
