Best Time to Visit Sano — New Year, Sales & Seasons

Good at any time; January is the liveliest month and midsummer the hottest.

Season by season

Winter. From 1 January through the month, Yakuyoke Daishi is crowded with worshippers and lined with food stalls. The outlets’ New Year sale is on, and hot ramen is at its most welcome.

Spring. Dogtooth violets on Mikamoyama in late March, cherry blossom in early April, then wisteria at nearby Ashikaga.

Summer. Sano regularly records some of the highest temperatures in Japan, often above 35°C. Shop early or in the evening.

Autumn. Pleasant and clear, with good views from Karasawayama and colour on the hill in late November.

Events

  • New Year prayers at Yakuyoke Daishi — throughout January.
  • Katakuri (dogtooth violet) festival, Mikamoyama — late March.
  • Sano Hidesato Festival — a summer festival in August.
  • Outlet sales — January, Golden Week, summer and late November.

Crowds

The first three days of January and sale weekends bring heavy traffic. Otherwise Sano is easy-going.

Southern Tochigi

Combine Sano with

Ashikaga

World-famous wisteria and winter illuminations at Ashikaga Flower Park, plus Japan’s oldest school and a moated samurai temple.

Tochigi City

A “little Edo” of black-walled storehouses along a willow-lined river, explored by pole boat — the town the prefecture is named after.
