Utsunomiya Tours — Oya Quarry Trips, Bar Hopping & Sushi Class

Two local experiences and several private day trips from Tokyo built around the Oya quarry.

What you can book

In the city, a guided bar-hopping tour introduces Utsunomiya’s drinking districts, and a sushi-making class with a local chef runs for about 90 minutes. Neither has many reviews yet.

From Tokyo, private-van tours visit the Oya History Museum, Oya-ji temple and a gyoza restaurant. One small-group Nikko tour finishes underground at Oya — an efficient way to combine both. There is also a private Nikko tour that starts and ends in Utsunomiya.

Oya is simple to reach by city bus, so a tour is a convenience rather than a necessity.

Central Tochigi

Combine Utsunomiya with

Nikko

Tokugawa Ieyasu’s gilded mausoleum, ancient cedars and a vermilion bridge — Japan’s most ornate World Heritage site.

Mashiko

A working pottery town of kilns, galleries and craft cafés, made famous by the folk-craft potter Hamada Shoji.

Tochigi City

A “little Edo” of black-walled storehouses along a willow-lined river, explored by pole boat — the town the prefecture is named after.
