From Tokyo
Shinkansen run two to four times an hour. The slower JR Utsunomiya Line, with through trains from Shinjuku and Tokyo stations, costs less than half and has Green Cars for a small supplement.
Airport limousine buses link Utsunomiya directly with Narita and Haneda; check current timetables.

To Oya
Take a Kanto Bus bound for Oya or Tateiwa from stop 6 at the west exit of JR Utsunomiya station (also stopping at Tobu-Utsunomiya) and get off at Shiryokan-iriguchi for the museum or Oya Kannon-mae for the temple. Buses run roughly every 30 minutes and take about 30 minutes. A one-day Oya sightseeing pass covering the return bus and discounts is sold at the station bus office.
Onward travel
- Nikko — JR Nikko Line, about 45 minutes.
- Nasushiobara — shinkansen 15 minutes, or local train about 50 minutes.
- Mashiko — direct bus from the station, about 1 hour.
- Tochigi City, Sano, Ashikaga — JR to Oyama, then the Ryomo Line.
Getting around
Buses along the main avenue (Odori) connect JR station with downtown and Tobu station every few minutes; the walk takes 20–25 minutes. The Lightline serves the east side. Rental bicycles are available near the station.
